In the song Smoke Break by Carrie Underwood, she mentions a woman who juggles three jobs as a mother and a wife. The mother struggles everyday because she is “feeding four little mouths in a run-down kitchen”. This mother is working so that her family has food on the table and clothes on their backs every day. This struggling mom simply desires to support her family; if that means she needs three jobs, so be it. The hard working mom does “nothing but giving” so that she can be a “a good wife and a good mom”. The song then mentions a young man who is the “first generation to go to college instead of driving a tractor”. The young man has pushed himself through school and the corporate world just so he can be “a good man” and a “good son”. The "good son" is working so that he can make a better life for himself and his family. Like the Mother, this man is striving for a higher standard of living for their loved ones. I think there is no better motivation than family and that it should be one reason everyone works. However, working for your family shouldn’t be the only reason to work. Yes, you should want to support your family but if it makes you unhappy you may need to reevaluate your actions. There are many diverse ways to make money and if what you are doing doesn’t make you happy then it might be time for a change. In the end, I do agree with Carrie but I think that one should also work for themselves and not just for others.
