This mural from Chicano Park is titled "Leyes--La Familia" painted by Jose Montoya. I chose this one because I like the image of the little boy holding the book that says “LEYES”, which translates to laws in English. The man in the back of the mural, who I’m assuming is the boy’s father, is holding the United Farm Workers flag high and proud. While his mother wraps her arms around her son as if she is trying to protect him. I thought that it was interesting that the young boy is holding the “leyes” book. The image is portraying that he may be starting to study laws at a young age so that he may defend his family, and other farm workers that slave away to provide for other families as well as their own. All three of their faces look worn and tired, like they’ve faced many hardships, even in the boy’s short lifetime. This painting shows the story of a family that had to survive unfair working conditions, pay, and overall treatment as human beings. No family should have to endure the things that migrant workers or any family of color did during this time period. Despite the fact that we are still facing discrimination, our nation has come a very long way since this time in our history.
